The Clinical Adherence System: A New Approach to Building Health Habits

Just some statistics for you.
“About 50.6% of U.S. adults live with at least one chronic illness, with prevalence expected to reach 50% by 2030.”
According to the CDC,
“Heart disease and stroke are the top killers, causing over 843,000 deaths annually (more than 1 in 4 deaths) and costing the U.S. health system $233.3 billion/year plus $184.6 billion in lost productivity.
Diabetes affects 38 million Americans, with 98 million adults having prediabetes; total costs in 2022 were $413 billion.”
So, where does this leave you and I, and our family members?

A Doctor’s POV
How many times have you heard of someone struggling to stick to their health goals?
How many times have you struggled with your health goals?
How many times have you walked into your regular clinic with something wrong hoping that the doctor figures it out?
How many times have you left the clinic receiving answers but just like a waitress or waiter, you have forgotten the instant the doctor closed the tab?
This is the Zeigarnik Effect, applied in healthcare.
It is not your fault though. You have been conditioned for dependence when you should have had a hand to hold you through independence in your health.
When you walk into your healthcare provider’s office you should:
Know why you entered = how you are feeling
Know what your provider is doing = examination
Know the plan = follow up efforts
Know how to describe the visit right after.
Many times, patients leave the clinic simply knowing that the provider gave treatment or follow-up, in some robotic way without understanding their volition in the matter = Autonomy.
But someone should have said,
Health Begins In The Mind.
And this is part of the entire process of health. Forgetting is part of it and each healthcare provider must remind each patient that health begins with them.
Health is more than wealth; health is –

Labor

Administration

Work

💰Debt

Insurance
Why adherence matters
Clinical adherence? How does it connect then?
The extent through which a person follows their prescribed course of medical care is a challenge.
Bold stats: According to the WHO, “only about 50% of patients with chronic diseases adhere to their treatment in developed countries.”
Can you imagine what it is like in developing countries? I will be the first to tell you, we have a significantly long way to go. Because in the end, we all want to live.
Critical issues of lack of adherence
Disease progression
Increased Morbidity & Mortality
Increased Hospitalization rate
Increased Healthcare Cost
Increased preventable deaths
Increased Family Strain
Increased Disability
Increased Community Burden
Increased Government spending
Greater loneliness (my understanding) = people eventually get overwhelmed and deviate the task to professionals = Families get tired (we see it every day in patients who get neglected on the wards, forgotten, by family members who want to enjoy their 1 life as well.) A sad reality often forgotten. We each have one life.
The truth is that those are simply some critical factors often not taken into consideration when looking at health.
Lack of Adherence contributes to Lost Productivity

Nothing Makes Sense being lost. Not even your health.
What does this Clinical Adherence System Do?
One less emergency. One better routine. One prepared month. One honest conversation. One wise refusal. One act of care repeated long enough to become character.
The 6-Month Clinical Adherence Journal & Health Habit Tracker was bit precisely for the aforementioned = to reduce the strain on the human mind, build stronger habits, KNOW about health and the journey with it.
It is part of the Brain Snacks™ Series by Dr. Joyan V. Chicot. It is a physician-designed guided framework to improve patient adherence, with only 15 minutes a day. Imagine this!
WITH 15 MINUTES A DAY YOU GIVE YOURSELF AN EXTRA CHANCE.
So, how does it work?
The Clinical Adherence System is centered on daily 15-minute journaling sessions. Each person spends a short, consistent period each day recording vital information, tracking medication intake, reflecting on symptoms and documenting lifestyle factors.
But it gets even better.
It helps to improve awareness with one’s health
It builds tenacity with healthcare
It allows the provider to see trends and make the necessary adjustments
It allows both you and your provider access your risk and build strategies to improve likelihood of complications.
It helps to improve alignment with medication.
It helps to improve cost. The financial constraints with lack of knowledge contributes to poor outcomes, that is, if you do not know that your blood pressure is worsening, then you won’t understand your risk of heart attacks. You will not know the actual cost of managing a sudden heart attack that may lead to death.

Remove the wild card from health.
It is within the consistent steps towards better health that we build a more robust and productive society. While the health hacks may contribute, if lack of consistency rides on your mind, then the delay rides your health.
This is the no fluff stuff that you are rarely told about in healthcare.
Quit delaying the idea of managing your health
Quit managing your health in a disorganized way.
Quit saying that you will start tomorrow. (We are all guilty of this at some point)
Give yourself the best possible chance for as long as you can with all the things that you can control during the only life that you have.
Get an accountability partner, invite them in and build from there.
